Puppy Checklist: Collars & Leashes
![]() |
All new puppies should learn how to wear collars and leashes. Your puppy may not like it at first, but it's important for holding the tags, as well as keeping the puppy on task during housetraining. Properly sizing your collar and leash are also important. See our recommendations below.
And important note on retractable leashes: We are seeing many puppies walking on retractable leashes. While it's true that the retractable may give a puppy "freedom" while keeping them under some form of control, retractable leashes are a leading cause of poor leash behavior and pulling. While your puppy is learning proper leash manners, it is in your best interest to keep your puppy on a regular leash. Once trained and with a decent recall, a retractable leash can be used to allow more freedom.
