Food Allergies

It's not uncommon for some dogs to have sensitivities to different foods.  For example, dogs may show sensitivities to chicken or beef or lamb.  They may also be sensitive to certain grains.  If you have changed your pet's diet to a quality meat-based food and they are still having issues with itching and scratching, it may be time to try a different, novel protein source or a grain-free food.

When dealing with food-bourne allergies it is important to remember that it can take 6 months or longer for your pet to recover to the sensitivity.  So if you have just switched foods, make sure you give it a few bags before expecting improvement.  If you have been on the food for longer than a few months and have seen no improvement, it's probably time to switch to a different protein source.

Ingredients to look for: Uncommon protein sources (duck, salmon, veison) and binders such as potato or tapioca.  Low allergen grains such as millet are good as well.

Ingredients to avoid: Common protein sources, rice, wheat and especially corn.
