Fabulous February Sales!

February is just around the corner. Here's a look at a great month of specials!

Help Us Help the Humane Society!

With hundreds of dogs and cats in our local shelter at any given time, it's really important to lend a hand. The Sebastian County Humane Society receives no state funding and must rely on private donations to keep the doors open.

YOU CAN HELP! Natura Pet Products has graciously donated a variety of items that we are offering FREE! to you with a donation made to the Humane Society. For a $1 donation, receive a canned food lid or dry food measuring cup. For a $3 donation, receive a heavy-duty frisbee. For a $5 donation, choose a Natura or Paw State t-shirt. For a $10 donation, receive a travel mug. (all offers available while supplies last).

In addition, we are offering 10% off each bag of food purchased for the Humane Society. You buy the bag (any size!) and we will deliver it!

Finally, we have Fire Safety stickers that let firefighters know the number of animals inside your house. $.25 of each $.50 sticker will be donated to the Humane Society.

There are so many ways to help. Please join us at Happy Tails and help us help the Humane Society!

Collegiate Gear Close-out!

We are closing out a lot of our collegiate gear, in Razorback, Sooner and OSU designs. Harnesses, leashes, pet sets, select collars and select jerseys are all on sale for half off.

This is a great deal, don't miss it!

The weather outside is *truly* frightful!

It's super cold out, and from what we hear it's just going to keep getting colder. Don't let your best four-legged friend face the chill without a sweater!

All our knit sweaters are on sale. Stop by and bring your pup to get him fitted for a sweater to ward off this awful chill!

2010 Obedience Schedule

I know lots of people have been waiting for it, so our 2010 obedience schedule is now available! Please keep in mind that dates for Jan/Feb classes will be subject to change in the event of inclement weather.

If you are interested in signing up for any of these classes, please visit our Rogers Ave location to fill out your paperwork and put down your deposit!

Obedience Classes & Winter Break

We have one more class of basic obedience classes available before we go on winter break*, starting Thursday Oct. 22nd at 7PM. There are a couple of spots left so call today to register!

Puppy Kindergarten classes will continue in rotation as long as we have puppies in class. If your dog is too old for puppy kindergarten, you've missed the last class before winter break, and are desperate for some help...call to make arrangements for private lessons, which are available year-round.

*Due to hectic holiday schedules and vacations, we suspend classes  from November to January. Make sure you come back in January of '10 to check the schedule for the new year.

Ask Bill: Feeding raw to a large dog.

Q: My big dog has terrible allergies. We are controlling it with benadryl and allergy shots, but that is getting expensive and I'm worried about being dependent on medications to make him comfortable. I've heard you say that the best diet for dogs with allergies is a raw diet, but he's so big I just don't think I can afford it. What is the next best thing?

A: It's very true that raw diets are the most natural for your pet, and will almost always help with allergies, poor skin condition, ear infections, etc. But there is definitely an increased cost when looking to feed a bigger dog a raw diet. Your best bet is to switch to a grain free kibble (like EVO or Instinct) or the very low-carb Nature's Logic. You can supplement the kibble with raw and grain-free canned foods. If you would like to supplement with raw we are now carrying Bravo Raw, which has a 5lb chicken formula chub for only $8.99. This particular raw food is not intended to be used as the entire diet, but instead to "mix in" with kibble. You can decide how much or how little you would like to use while transitioning your dog to a more natural diet. By eliminating grain from his diet and incorporating more easily digestible nutrition in the form of raw meats or canned food, you will boost your dog's immune system which will help a great deal with allergies. For more information check out the pet nutrition section of our website.

Ask Bill: Destructive Chewing

Q: I have a young boxer mix who destroys every toy we bring home. And once he's done eating his toys, then he eats our shoes, remotes, glasses...whatever fits in his mouth. We are afraid to leave anything out because he will destroy it. We are thinking of finding him a new home because we just can't find anything to keep him occupied that he can't destroy.

A: Destructive behavior is often a symptom of a deeper problem - boredom. When your dog isn't getting enough exercise and stimulation, he will resort to eating through walls, devouring books and, yes, chewing anything that fits into his mouth. No toy is completely indestructible, but there are many toys made for aggressive chewers and dogs who can't seem to get enough. First, make sure you're walking your dog, preferably every day. A good game of fetch is great for wearing out a hyper dog, but it's better to skip the tennis balls and use a solid rubber ball that is much tougher. We carry them for $4.79. For a dog who needs stimulation while you're away or busy, we carry two great items. The first is a brand new chew called the Everlasting Treat Ball. Made of incredibly resilient rubber, it has two large openings for tough treats or food. It is slightly rounded and wobbles all over the place. With food or treats inserted, it can keep your dog busy for hours.

We also carry black Kongs, which are great for stuffing with food and treats.

We only carry the black kongs because they are stronger and made for more aggressive chewers. Come by and talk with us for more ideas on toys and chews for your dog and be sure to sign up for our newsletter!

Get Serious is back!

Get Serious, the popular stain and odor remover, is back in stock!

Get Serious is not a "saturate and soak" cleaner, so it lasts a lot longer. It can be microwaved to increase effectiveness and is great on all kinds of stubborn stains. Because it's not a neutralizer or a cover-up, Get Serious lifts the stains from deep in the carpet AND the padding. Will not yellow the carpet and will even remove yellowing from other cleaners. Can also be used on upholstry. Removes the pheremone so that pets won't return to a place to re-mark.

If you have a housetraining problem, come in and talk to us. Between advice on crate training, housetraining wraps for male dogs, and a full-line of excellent stain and odor removers we can help you (and your pet) with all your housetraining woes.

Ask Bill: On a good diet, my dog is still itching!

Q: My dog has been using your foods for about 6 months and he is still scratching. I thought diet was supposed to help? He doesn't get any table scraps, just his food and some of those T-Bone treats when he's a good boy. What gives?

A: While diet may not cure seasonal external allergies, like grass allergies, they should improve. More than that, however, you should probably take a closer look at the ingredients list of the treats you're giving. Keeping common allergens out of the food does no good if your dog's treats are loaded with things that make your dog itch! Check out the ingredients for Purina T-Bonz: Ground wheat, corn gluten meal, water, wheat flour, ground yellow corn, sugar, glycerin, beef, chicken by-product meal, hydrogenated starch hydrolysate, corn starch-modified, liver, soybean meal... Wheat and corn are very common allergens, and they are the primary ingredients of these treats. You should try to find treats that avoid all grains, such as Merrick's beef or lamb training treats, or Zuke's Z-Filets.

Healthy treats, packed with pure protein goodness. An added benefit of these meat-only treats is that they are great for dog's with weight issues and are very effective as training treats. This month, our Merrick treats are on sale as well as some of our most popular chews like flossies and Texas Toothpicks. I
