wheat gluten and the pet food recall

Everyone is justifiably upset by the suspected poisons found in wheat gluten from China. They have every right to be upset over the suspected melamine and rat poison found in these products. The problem is they are missing the point I have been making for three years now. There is absolutely no justification for wheat gluten, or corn gluten or rice gluten to be in any dog or cat food, especially not supposedly "premium" foods like Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Nutro, Nutro Ultra, or Proplan. The only reason gluten is in pet food is to jack up the protein content. Gluten is an inexpensive by-product of food processing and I believe it is a hard to digest and predominant source of "allergies" in our pets.

Recalled foods

We appreciate all the concern over the recent "pet food recall". The foods we carry are not involved in the recall.

Iams, Eukanube Old Roy etc pouched foods are just afew of the pet foods recalled by the MFG. Most are generic grocery and discount brands. Ie Price Chopper, wal Mart etc. These big companies contract out many of their products for someone else to make and they have little control over quality in or quality out. We try to handle foods that are made mostly in house by the Mfg. I am very pleased that so many people in the Fort Smith area value our extensive experience and knowledge of the pet industry. Bill

March 2007 Pet Food Recall

In the last few days we have received numerous frantic phone calls from pet Mom's and Dad's asking about the most recent pet food recall.  To set your mind at ease we wanted to let you know that none of the foods that have been recalled are sold at Happy Tails

According to the website, this recall affects "cuts and gravy" style food sold in cans and pouches, and is likely linked to wheat (a common filler) coming from a new source.  53 brands of dog food and 42 brands of cat food were affected and are being recalled by Menu Pet Foods. Not listed on the website, but voluntarily participating in the recall, are Hill's Science Diet & Pedigree.  You can visit the recall website, www.menupetfoods.com/recall , for more information or you may call the phone number listed on their website, 1-866-895-2708.

Unsightly Tear Stains?

According to their brochure, Angels' Eyes is the first product specifically developed for both dogs and cats to eliminate unsightly tear stains from the inside out. And let me tell you, it WORKS. And not just on tear stains, either! Discoloration from chewing/licking has also been dramatically reduced in several of our dogs, and they are well on their way to the bright white coats they've had in the past.

Angels' Eyes is a palatable powder made with beef liver that you sprinkle on your dog or cat's food. You'll use no more than a teaspoon a day for dogs and cats. Other tear staining products are topical and require scrubbing. Angels Eyes "starts working before the tear stains begin".

Iams versus Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul

I will compare Iams Mini Chunks adult (green bag) to Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul (adult). Both are "chicken" based formulas. First you need to know the rule about "chicken" that our Government and Corporate officials made and did not tell you or me about. "Chicken" is the flesh of chicken in its "wet" state similar to the way you would buy it for yourself. For pet food purposes it is weighed before it is processed. This is important to know because chicken meat is 75% to 80% moisture. If you are feeding a dry food there is obviously no "wet"chicken breast or thighs in your dry food. The "chicken" has been changed to a chicken meal type product in the final analysis and by weight is proportionately less in your pets food. "Chicken" can be listed as the first ingredient in the ingredients list by weight but in actuality the "dried chicken protein" would be way down the list of ingredients. Make sure the "chicken" is backed up with chicken meal, hopefully as the second ingredient. (This rule applies to all meat protein - beef, lamb, venison, turkey, duck, salmon Etc.)

comparison of pet food ingredients.

do you know what you are actually feeding your pet? For the next month I am going to list the ingredients in many of the most popular dog and cat foods.  For example I bet you did not know that Iams dog food ( green bag) is almost all corn meal and sorghum. Two excellent, excellent cattle and chicken feeds, not feeds for carnivores. Your dog and cat would never recognize these feed grains as a source of food. My qualifications include 35 years in the pet industry both in the retail end and AKC show handling. In our retail store we introduced Science Diet, Eukanuba, Iams, Pro Plan, Nutro, and BilJac to the general public long before anyone ever heard of these brands. We lintroduced them because they were top quality Meat based foods. The only food we still carry is Bil Jac. The rest of these foods are not meat based anymore and mostly composed of left overs from the human processing industry.  It is now all about advertising and greed and your pets health is suffering.
